Google Review Rules for Businesses in Pakistan: What Is Allowed

By the Smart Visiting Card team · Updated 2026-10-27

Draft for editorial review: facts in [brackets] need confirming before launch.

Short answer: Google lets you ask customers for reviews, and an NFC review card or standee is simply an easier way to ask. Google does not allow you to reward reviews, filter who you ask so only happy customers review, pressure people to review while they are in your shop, or ask for specific wording. Breaking these rules can get reviews removed and can lead to restrictions on your Business Profile.

The rules below come from Google's Maps user-contributed content policy. Read the source pages linked at the end, because Google updates them.

What you are allowed to do

  • Ask every customer for an honest review, in person, on the receipt, by WhatsApp or with a review card at the counter.
  • Make it easy: share your direct review link, put an NFC card or QR code where people pay or wait, or include the link in a delivery message.
  • Reply to reviews, both good and bad. Polite, specific replies show future customers that you listen.
  • Remind customers once, politely, if they said they would leave one.

What is not allowed

1. Incentives of any kind

Google doesn't allow merchants to offer anything in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing a negative review. In Pakistan, these are common examples: - "Leave a 5-star review and get 10% off your next visit" - A free dessert, haircut add-on or delivery in return for a review - Entering reviewers into a lucky draw - Paying an agency or freelancer for reviews

The same rule covers asking someone to edit or delete a bad review in exchange for a refund or gift. You can resolve the complaint. You can't make removing the review the condition.

2. Review gating (asking only happy customers)

Google doesn't allow you to "discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews." In practice: - ❌ A screen that asks "Were you happy?" and only shows the Google link to people who answer yes - ❌ Handing the review card only to customers who smiled - ✅ Offering the card or link to everyone, or to a consistent group (for example, every customer at checkout)

3. Pressure on the premises

Google says merchants should not require or pressure customers to leave ratings or reviews while on the premises. Placing a standee on the counter is fine. Standing over a customer until they post a review isn't.

4. Review targets and scripts for staff

Google gives two specific examples: asking staff to collect a certain number of reviews, and asking staff to get reviews that include specific content (for example, "please mention our biryani and our branch name").

Reasonable alternatives: - Track how often staff offer the card, not how many reviews arrive - Never suggest what the customer should write

5. Fake or conflicted reviews

Reviews must reflect a genuine experience. Reviews from owners, staff, family or anyone with a conflict of interest aren't allowed, and neither are reviews posted on a competitor's listing to harm them. Unusual spikes in reviews can also be filtered.

Where NFC review cards fit

An NFC review card, coin, plate or standee opens your Google review form with one tap. A QR code on the same product opens it on phones without NFC. These products are an asking tool:

  • ✅ They remove the friction of searching for your business and finding the review button.
  • ❌ They do not, and cannot, guarantee reviews, ratings or rankings. Be wary of any seller who promises "5-star reviews" or a ranking boost.

We programme each product with the direct review link from your Google Business Profile. If you don't have it yet, see how to find your Google review link.

A compliant setup for a typical Pakistani business

Business Where to place it What staff say
Restaurant / café On the bill folder or table "If you have a minute, a Google review helps us. Just tap here."
Salon / clinic Reception desk Same wording for every client, at checkout
Retail shop Next to the card machine Offered with every receipt
Home delivery / online store Card in the parcel Printed note: "Tell others about your experience"

Keep the wording neutral, and use it with every customer.

What happens if you break the rules

Google says content that violates its policies may be removed, and Business Profiles involved in fake engagement can face restrictions. Google publishes these consequences on its Business Profile help pages. You don't need to risk it: asking everyone in a neutral way works within the rules.

FAQs

Can I ask my family to review my business? No. Reviews from people with a conflict of interest aren't allowed.

Can I run a giveaway for followers who review us? No. Any reward linked to leaving a review is an incentive.

Can I ask an unhappy customer to remove their review? You can fix their problem and reply publicly. If they choose to update their review, that is up to them. Don't offer anything in return for removing or changing it.

Is it allowed to show the review card only after payment? Yes, as long as it is shown to every paying customer, not just the ones who seem happy.

Does a review card affect my Google ranking? Not directly. The card makes asking easier. Google decides local rankings using its own factors, and no product can guarantee a rating or a position.
