NFC Card Not Working? Fixes for iPhone and Android

Draft for editorial review: facts in [brackets] need confirming before launch.
Short answer: most NFC cards that "don't work" are fine. The phone either has NFC switched off, is being tapped in the wrong spot, or has something blocking the signal, such as a thick case, a metal ring holder or a wallet cover. Fix those three things and nearly every card opens. If the phone has no NFC at all, scan the QR code on the back of the card instead.
This guide covers what to check, in order, on iPhone and Android.
1. Check the phone can read NFC
iPhone
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every newer model read NFC cards automatically when the screen is on. You don't need an app or a setting.
- iPhone 7, 8 and X can read NFC cards, but only through the NFC Tag Reader button in Control Center (iOS 14 or later). Add it under Settings > Control Center, open Control Center, tap the NFC icon, then hold the card to the phone.
- iPhone 6s and older cannot read NFC cards. Use the QR code.
Android
Most mid-range and flagship Android phones sold in Pakistan have NFC. Many budget models don't. To check: 1. Open Settings and search for NFC. 2. If an NFC switch appears, turn it on. On Samsung it is under Connections > NFC and contactless payments. On most other brands it is under Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC. 3. If the search finds nothing, the phone has no NFC chip. Use the QR code.
Android only reads NFC while the screen is on and unlocked.
2. Tap the right spot
The NFC antenna is a small area, not the whole phone.
| Phone | Where to hold the card |
|---|---|
| iPhone | The top edge on the back, near the camera. Hold the card flat against the top of the phone. |
| Samsung Galaxy | Usually the middle of the back. |
| Most other Android phones | The upper-middle of the back, just below the camera. |
Hold the card still for one to two seconds. Quick swipes often miss. The card has to be within a few centimetres of the antenna, so touching is best.
Metal cards: tap with the PVC side, not the metal face. Metal blocks the NFC signal, which is why our metal cards carry the chip behind a PVC back.
3. Remove anything in the way
These are the most common blockers: - Thick or rugged cases, especially those with a metal plate - Magnetic ring holders, PopSockets and car-mount plates stuck on the back - Wallet cases holding several bank or ID cards, which can confuse the phone - Another NFC card stacked behind the one you are tapping
Take the phone out of its case and try again. If it works without the case, the case is the problem.
4. iPhone: things that pause NFC reading
Apple's documentation lists situations where the iPhone stops reading NFC tags in the background, even with the screen on: - The phone hasn't been unlocked since it was restarted - Airplane mode is on - The camera is open - Apple Pay / Wallet is open - Another app is already using NFC
Close the camera or Wallet, turn off Airplane mode and try again.
When an iPhone reads the card, a notification banner appears at the top of the screen. Tap the banner to open the profile. Many people miss this step and think the card failed.
5. Android: things that stop it opening
- The "open link" prompt: newer Android versions show a small notification first. Tap it.
- No default browser: if the phone asks which app to use, choose Chrome or another browser and select Always.
- Battery saver or power-saving modes on some brands switch NFC off. Turn the mode off and try again.
- "NFC tag type not supported": this message usually means the phone found a different card in your wallet case. Separate the cards.
6. When the card opens but shows the wrong page
If the card opens but the page is wrong, the link on the chip is the issue, not the card or the phone. - "Page not found": the profile link may have changed. Message us your order number and we will check the link on the chip. - Instagram or TikTok opens in a browser instead of the app: that is normal on some phones. The profile still works, and the visitor can tap Open in app. - A private social profile: visitors see only a follow request. Switch the account to public if you want people to see your posts.
7. Test it the right way
Test with a second phone that you know has NFC turned on. Your own phone may have settings that block NFC. If the card works on one phone but not another, the card is fine and the second phone needs the fixes above.
Still not working?
Every card we ship is programmed and test-tapped on a phone before dispatch. If a card doesn't work when it arrives, report it within 7 days and we will reprogram or replace it free. See our returns and replacement policy.
The fastest way to get help is to WhatsApp us a 10-second video of you tapping the card. It usually shows the problem straight away.
FAQs
Does the person tapping need an app? No. iPhone XS and newer, and Android phones with NFC switched on, open the link with no app.
Can an NFC card stop working over time? The chip has no battery, so it doesn't run down. Cracks, deep bends or strong heat can damage the chip or its antenna. Keep the card flat in a wallet or cardholder.
Will a magnet erase my card? Everyday magnets, such as phone mounts and bag clasps, don't erase NFC chips. A magnet on the phone can block the signal while it is there.
My phone has no NFC. What now? Scan the QR code on the back of the card with the phone camera. It opens the same profile.
