How to Design a Custom Metal Business Card

Draft for editorial review: facts in [brackets] need confirming before launch.
Short answer: pick the metal finish first (black, gold or silver), then keep the metal side simple: logo, name and title in one colour. Put everything that needs colour or detail on the PVC back: the full-colour logo, contact lines and the QR code. That side is also where people tap, because metal blocks the NFC signal.
This guide explains each decision and shows what works on our metal NFC card.
How our metal NFC card is built
| Part | What it is | What it means for your design |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Metal: black, gold or silver | Printed in one colour (white or brown). Best for logo, name and title. |
| Back | PVC, full-colour print | Best for colour logos, contact details and the QR code. |
| Chip | NFC chip behind the PVC back | Tap with the PVC side. The metal side does not read. |
Knowing these limits before you design saves a round of mockup changes.
Step 1: Choose the finish to match your brand
- Black: the most popular choice for executives, law firms, real estate and consultants. White print gives the highest contrast.
- Gold: warm and formal. It suits jewellers, hospitality, events and luxury retail. Brown print reads well and looks deliberate.
- Silver: clean and technical. It suits engineers, architects, IT and medical professionals.
Tip: if your logo is mostly black, a silver card with dark print keeps it recognisable. If your logo only works in colour, use the PVC back for the colour version and a simplified one-colour mark on the metal.
Step 2: Design the metal side for one colour
Single-colour printing on metal looks best with: - A solid or outline logo. Gradients, photos and thin shadows don't reproduce on a one-colour print. Ask us to make a one-colour version if you only have a full-colour logo. - Two or three lines of text at most. Your name, title and company are enough. The profile does the rest. - Generous margins. Keep text and logo well inside the edges so nothing looks cramped. - Text that isn't too small. Very small type fills in on metal. If you have to squint at the mockup, make it larger.
Avoid putting phone numbers, email and full addresses on the metal side. It crowds the design, and your details may change. That's what the NFC profile is for.
Step 3: Use the PVC back for detail and the QR code
The PVC back prints in full colour, so it can carry: - Your full-colour logo - One or two contact lines (website, WhatsApp) - A QR code that opens the same profile, for phones without NFC - A small "Tap here" icon, so people know which side to tap
Put the tap icon roughly in the centre of the PVC side. That is where people naturally hold the card to the phone.
Step 4: Decide what goes on your digital profile
The card opens a profile. Plan its contents now so the mockup and the profile match: - Photo or logo, name, title, company - Buttons: call, WhatsApp, email, website, Google Maps location - Social links you actually use for work, such as LinkedIn, Instagram or a portfolio - A Save contact button. This is included.
You can update the profile later without reprinting.
Step 5: Review the mockup properly
We send a free mockup before anything is printed. Check: 1. Spelling of your name, title and company, letter by letter 2. Logo: the one-colour version on the metal side still looks like your brand 3. Contrast: white on black, or brown on gold, is easy to read 4. QR code: scan it from the mockup on your screen, and it should open your profile 5. Side: the tap icon is on the PVC back
Nothing is printed until you approve.
