How NFC Contact Sharing Works Without an App

Draft for editorial review: facts in [brackets] need confirming before launch.
Short answer: an NFC business card doesn't send your contact details straight into someone's phone. It sends a web link. The phone opens that link in its browser, which shows your digital profile, and a Save contact button on the profile adds you to their contacts. iPhones (XS and newer) and NFC-enabled Android phones do this without any app, on either side.
Here is what happens step by step, and why most good NFC cards are built this way.
What is actually on the chip
The card contains a small passive chip and an antenna, with no battery. Our cards use the NXP NTAG215 chip, which has 504 bytes of user memory. That is room for a short web address, not a photo gallery.
When a phone comes within a few centimetres, its NFC reader powers the chip by induction. The chip replies with the data written on it, which is usually one NDEF record containing a URL such as https://…/yourname.
What the person tapping sees
- They hold their phone near your card. On iPhone, a banner appears at the top of the screen. On Android, the browser opens or a small "open link" prompt appears.
- Your profile opens in their browser. It shows your photo or logo, name, title and company, plus buttons to call, WhatsApp, email, get directions or visit your website.
- They tap "Save contact." The profile downloads a contact file (a vCard,
.vcf). The phone shows a preview, and one more tap saves you with your name, number, email, company and website filled in.
That is three short steps, with no typing, no misspelt email addresses and no app to install.
Why not store the contact directly on the chip?
NFC chips can hold a contact card (a vCard record) instead of a link, and a few blank-card sellers do this. It has real drawbacks:
| Link to a profile (what we do) | Contact stored on the chip | |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone support | Opens reliably on iPhone XS and newer | iPhone background reading is built around web links; contact records are not handled the same way on every model, so results vary |
| Update your details | Edit the profile, no new card needed | Rewrite the chip, or order a new card |
| Space | One short link | Small chips fill up quickly with longer details |
| Extras | WhatsApp, maps, portfolio, social links | Only basic contact fields |
| QR backup | The same link can go in a QR code | Needs a separate QR |
So the link-to-profile approach works on more phones, and you can update your details without reprinting.
What if their phone has no NFC?
Plenty of budget phones in Pakistan don't have NFC. That's why every card we make carries a QR code that opens the same profile. The other person points their camera at the QR code and gets the same profile, with the same Save contact button.
What you control
Because the card is a link to your profile, you can: - Change your number, title or company without a new card - Add your WhatsApp, Google Maps location or a new social account - Swap a portfolio or price list link before a meeting
Profile updates are free for 2 years from activation with our business cards. Ask us about renewal after that.
Common questions
Does the other person need to be on the same network or have Bluetooth on? No. NFC works on its own. They need mobile data or Wi-Fi only to load your profile page.
Can I share to someone who is not in front of me? Yes. Copy your profile link into WhatsApp or email. The card is for in-person sharing, and the link works anywhere.
Is my phone number visible to anyone who taps? Only what you put on your profile is visible. If you would rather share email and WhatsApp than a personal number, leave the number off. See Are NFC business cards safe?
Does it work with WhatsApp Business?
Yes. A WhatsApp button on the profile uses a click-to-chat link (wa.me/92…), which opens a chat with your WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number.
